Hurricane Ike news blackout; 1500 bodies found in Galveston?
..

By GottaLaff

One of our many astute Anonymi pointed me to this one:

..The following is from an email sent to me by a good friend in Nacogdoches whose buddy has been over Galveston - names have been edited out to protect the folks those who relayed the report.
Also relayed from this guy and others: persons going into the restricted area are apparently being patted down and cameras are being confiscated, by Army and Coast Guard personnel.
....Okay...I've got some news on this front. Take it for what it's worth, but the guy I got it from is someone I trust to raise my children... He's never once lied to me...ever. And we're close.

He's in a pretty high-up supervisory position for a refinery down on the coast.

His refinery has some equipment and lines in and around Galveston county, and before they were to bring them back on line he and his crew had to inspect the place for damage and potential hazards.
So they were given permission....after a background check....to helicopter in and inspect, which meant coming in over Galveston.

I kid you not when I say that he told me they saw AT LEAST 1500 bodies in trees scattered about Galveston.
They also saw a lot in various ditches and marshes, esp. on the north side of East Galv. Bay, east side of Trinity Bay, and in the marshes between I-45 and Seabrook/Clear Lake/Deer Park.

It explains why they're not letting the media anywhere close to the Island except in limited sectors nd we're not hearing anything from or about the people who survived and those who stayed behind.
It's like 20,000 people never existed....where are they? Where'd they go? What are their names? Nothing....

Same thing in Orange county.

Take it for what it's worth....I believe him, though his count may be wrong given the shock of the sight. But like I said, I'd trust him to raise my kids.

I'd be more surprised if he were wrong than if he were right.

..

..

And from Rhiannon Myers of the Galveston Daily News comes this dispatch:

GALVESTON - Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas on Monday ordered all city employees not to talk to news reporters. She did not say when that order would be lifted.

Thomas and City Manager Steve LeBlanc will be the only officials allowed to talk to reporters.
City spokeswoman Mary Jo Naschke vehemently denied the city was trying to clamp down on coverage.

......

Reporters would be allowed on the island only if they had proper identification, Thomas said. She didn't clarify what that meant.

Reporters were also forbidden from visiting areas on the far West End, Thomas said.
She did not explain why.
..How sad is it that I'm no longer surprised by this kind of disturbing news?

In its brief lifespan of only 13 days, Hurricane Ike wreaked great deal of havoc. Affecting several countries including Cuba, Haiti, and the United States, Ike is blamed for approximately 114 deaths (74 in Haiti alone), and damages that are still being tallied, with estimates topping $10 billion. Many shoreline communities of Galveston, Texas were wiped from the map by the winds, storm surge and the walls of debris pushed along by Ike - though Galveston was spared the level of disaster it suffered in 1900.

As of now it is unconfirmed, though i thought it a bit poignant for the simple reason that where i am, i have heard/seen little to nothing about hurricane ike through all forms of media. Which was much stronger than Gustav, and from the pictures that i viewed from the scant news reports i saw the peninsula just south of Galveston was miles upon miles of nothing but sand and wreckage.. If there were people anywhere close to that, they most certainly would not have survived where literally whole houses were washed out to see for miles inland..

If you go to: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/ you'll find a link to the low-altitude aerial photos taken after the storm, which are sufficiently high resolution that you can check this rumor out for yourself. Additionally, the airspace over this area has not been closed, and you can find video by individuals posted on YouTube. I am not in this area right now, but I have spoken to several who are. What they have been through is bad enough, without having crazy stories like this going around. There are still people missing, and I'm sure that more bodies will be found, but the truth is just the opposite of this rumor...there aren't enough bodies found to account for the missing, and it is feared that some bodies have been swept out to sea, and may not be found until they wash up farther southwest down the coast. The number of missing is not known. So many people are without power or phone, and are simply out of communication, that the number of missing may not be known until power is restored in the next few weeks. Information about power restoration can be found through www.khou.com

Thank you for sharing your Opinion Ebun. I too, actually know many people who live in Galveston and Houston as well. As for the sufficiently high resolution aerial images, I think the link you were attempting to direct us to was this http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/ike/IKE0000.HT (correct me if I'm wrong) because the one you provided, went straight to a 404 error code for me. After toying with the link you posted, i was able to gain access to the link i provided, which after much scrutinization proved to be usless for seeing things as small as bodies. At it's largest magnification i could just make out the roof's of vehicles and thin roads. I found pictures here: http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Hurricane-Ike/ss/events/us/091208hurric aneike#photoViewer=/080918/480/d41b0a08085c4452aab91c9c72597bb6 , to be more useful for any small details. Although those Also don't do anything to prove or disprove this article either way. It is true, There are many missing, and unaccounted for as of right now, but where are the estimations? Where is the Media ..? Others I know as well as myself have noticed a very minimal amount of television, and radio coverage in our ( widely seperated ) areas. WHY, i ask. Where are the countless survivor stories i have come to expect from watching, and reading the news throughout the past two decades? This article clearly points out that the numbers of missing stated could be purely speculatory. All this on top of the fact of the matter that There Are MANY Still Unaccounted for, so.. IS the *possibility of someone reporting what they might have seen, Really that CRAZY? I would say Not. And frankly it is not "Just the opposite" of what this article states, by the obvious fact that the estimations stated in the article are possibly *SPECULATORY* - We have no proof either way, outside of the media being uncharacteristically quiet about it. (Which should raise suspicion on it's own.) It is not stated as a fact, so in this case how can it be the opposite of something deemed not finite, without real proof. Much of my mother's side of my family resides in Houston, and i sympathize deeply with the situation at hand. My problem is.. if something like this did happen.. I would feel ASHAMED to have stood by and questioned nothing, while something so potentially horrific, could possibly be being swept under the carpet, by the dirty hands of an all too notorious government that may not want anymore potential "waves" disrupting the setting for the upcoming elections. Again Ebun, I thank you for you opinion, though seeing as that you, as I, have no concrete evidence, the question still remains. I hope for the best, and want for this to be untrue as yourself, though with all i've seen in my lifetime a possibility such as this seems neither impossible, nor crazy.

Source http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/sep/14/ike-rips-into-tex/ HOUSTON -- Rescuers in boats, helicopters and high-water trucks fanned out along the flood-stricken Texas coast Saturday in a monumental effort to reach tens of thousands of people who stubbornly ignored warnings and tried to ride out Hurricane Ike. The storm roared ashore hours before daybreak with 110 mph winds and towering waves, smashing houses, flooding thousands of homes, blowing out windows in Houston's skyscrapers, and cutting off power to more than 3 million people, perhaps for weeks, though some had been restored by nightfall. By evening, it appeared that Ike was not the single calamitous stroke that forecasters had feared. But the full extent of the damage -- or even a rough sense of how many people may have perished -- was still unclear, in part because many roads were impassable. Some authorities feared that this could instead become a slow-motion disaster, with thousands of victims trapped in their homes, waiting for days to be rescued. "We will be doing this probably for the next week or more. We hope it doesn't turn into a recovery," said Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Marlow in Orange County, where 600 to 700 people had to be rescued from flooded homes. He said hundreds were probably still stranded. By some estimates, more than 140,000 of the 1 million or so people who had been ordered to evacuate the coast as Ike drew near may have tried to tough it out. Many of them evidently realized the mistake too late, and pleaded with authorities in vain to save them overnight. Since Ike made landfall, there have been 940 rescues in Texas of people stranded in homes, vehicles and elsewhere, said Gov. Rick Perry's spokeswoman Allison Castle. In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal said nearly 600 people were plucked from Ike's floodwaters since Friday and that search and rescue teams believe the largest number of rescues was behind them. - 140,000 people 940 r3scues by the time this article was published .. the 14th of September.....Where's all the public media footage of people camped out on their roofs? I'm wondering if as the weeks emerge we will even see the black X's on the homes of the deceased plastered all over the headlines like we did for Katrina.., So far all I've heard in media coverage, is about those who survived in the less stricken areas who are now living without power and hot water.. next to zero about the rescue's going on and the estimated numbers still unaccounted for.. the more i uncover about this.. the more something doesn't seem right.. I also came across this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/slightclutter/2866384931/ which mentions; "The national media has pretty much moved on from the Hurricane Ike story, and for those who do cover the hurricane's aftermath, they do so by telling the stories of no electricity to over a million or by discussing FEMA Pod locations. They don't concern themselves much with scenes such as this one - scenes that are front and center in Seabrook and Kemah, Baytown and La Porte, Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula, San Leon and..." -Continued at source page; Also ran into this: http://www.nola.com/hurricane-ike/index.ssf/2008/09/in_galveston_flooded_streets_a.html - Where these comments were left in reaction to the post - "Galvatraz is a small NOrleans in attitude. It will be a disaster for sometime. Any why not more news about the island from the general media? There's an information void." & "Where's the media pics of rescues on GIsland? How about video of AIr Force flyovers of the West End, East End too, the entire island? Yes, there is info out there, but the media is not allowed access! The 'authorities' pitched a Galveston reporter out of a shelter. Allow the public access!!".... I will seriously be relieved if all this proves to be false.. - Vox

Aaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnd we have what seems to be good news about the status of Ike victims.. O,o................. GALVESTON, Texas - One week after Hurricane Ike wiped out whole neighborhoods and nearly every basic service in Galveston, there is a plan to start letting some 45,000 evacuees back to their hobbled hometown. Those who left heeded dire warnings to flee. Now they've been given a new warning: Going home won't be easy. No power, limited sewer services and spotty water utilities are among the trials that city officials say could await residents when a gradual reopening of Galveston begins next week. "You will need to decide if you want to come back in those conditions," city manager Steve LeBlanc said Friday. Residents will be allowed to return in phases, starting from the least damaged areas, primarily behind the seawall on the east side of the island, then out to the heavily damaged west end, he said. There's only limited fuel and other supplies. But businesses are slowly beginning to open, electricity is coming back on and cell phone service is improving. Residents of the harder-hit Boliviar Peninsula will also start seeing their homes next week, albeit for only a quick peek. And because the main road is impassible in many spots, residents will be loaded into dump trucks and other heavy vehicles for their tour. Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough, the county's highest elected official, said 60 state troopers were patrolling the heavily damaged peninsula. "We need the people's patience," Yarbrough said. "A lot of progress has been made. We're in a marathon. We're not in a 100-yard dash." Authorities have long since finished searching for bodies on Galveston Island and the peninsula, though they cautioned more could be found. Authorities had blamed 57 deaths in the U.S. on Ike, 23 of them in Texas. Power had been restored Friday to more than half the customers whose electricity was cut by Ike, though state officials said about 1.41 million remained in the dark. The nation's fourth-largest city continues recovering. Houston schools that have been closed since Ike are to begin reopening Tuesday. All campuses are expected to be open by Sept. 29. State Rep. Craig Eiland, who represents Galveston, said officials are trying to gather the thousands of cattle that have been roaming free since the storm surge receded. The water that remains is so salty it could kill animals that drink it, and the grass they would normally eat also has been tainted, he said. NASA said Friday that flight control of the International Space Station was returning to the Johnson Space Center, which shut down a few days before Ike's strike but did not sustain significant damage. More than 1 million people evacuated the Texas coast as Ike steamed across the Gulf of Mexico. Gov. Rick Perry said 20,500 people were still staying in 190 shelters Friday. About 135,500 families had qualified for government-funded hotels, though fewer than 9,000 were checked in, said Richard Scorza, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. 23 people regrettably passed on, in the wake of Ike throughout Texas thus far.. Thankfully this is no Katrina. & thankfully this article is playing out to be false, rather than someone's highly exaggerated recollection of a traumatic experience. I would still like an explanation about the serious lack of media coverage.. Gustav was a mere bump on the radar in comparison, and it was all but a show stopper for the republican national convention. What was Ike.., & fifty seven people dead ..? Chopped Livah? To quote my old jewish nanny.. Also I am very interested in finding the source of this letter ...
